Chimera – “You’re So Vain”

about Neoteric Records
We were more than just a label; we were part of a movement. During a time when house music was moving from underground warehouses to the mainstream, Neoteric was on the ground, capturing the sounds of Northern England, the Midlands, and the South East.
Chimera – “You’re So Vain” (1996): A standout release produced and arranged by the talented Martin Brooker and Rew. This marked a significant moment for us as catalog number NRCD0001.
Chimera – “Falling Into You”: A favorite among DJs, this 12″ vinyl single (NRL 9) featured multiple mixes that became staples on dance floors across the country.

FAQ’s
Neoteric Records was a British independent record label that played a key role in the UK’s electronic and house music scene. Active during the 1990s and early 2000s, the label was known for helping shape the “handbag house” and Euro-dance sounds that were popular in clubs across the UK.
The label’s “golden era” was the mid-to-late 1990s. This was a period when house music was exploding in popularity beyond London, particularly in the Midlands and Northern England, and Neoteric was right at the center of that energy.
Neoteric was a champion of the dance floor. We specialized in House, Euro-House, Electronic, and Speed Garage. Our releases ranged from soulful vocal tracks to high-energy club anthems that were staples in the UK club circuit.
One of our most consistent projects was Chimera, featuring the arrangements of Martin Brooker and Rew. We also released music by Taboo (featuring the powerful vocals of Maxine Richards), Borsetta, and Sylvia Mason-James.
Our inaugural CD release was NRCD0001, which featured the track “I Just Can’t Help Believing” by Borsetta in 1996. Shortly after, we released the iconic Chimera version of “You’re So Vain” (NRCD3), which became a signature sound for the label.
We maintained a traditional independent labeling system to help collectors and DJs identify our music. Vinyl releases used the prefix NRL (e.g., NRL 6 for Chimera’s “Show Me Heaven”), while CD singles used NRCD.
Collectors often seek out Chimera’s cover of “Show Me Heaven” (1996) and the 1998 remix of “Lady Marmalade” by Taboo featuring Maxine Richards. These tracks captured the high-energy, “feel-good” vibe that Neoteric was famous for.
While our music reached fans globally, our roots were firmly in the UK. We were particularly influential in the regional house scenes of the Midlands and the North of England, where our 12″ vinyl’s were frequently found in the bags of the era’s top club DJs.
We also enjoyed a significant following in Ireland, specifically with the success of “You’re So Vain” and “Show Me Heaven.” Neoteric Records releases were licensed worldwide, spanning countries such as Germany, Australia, and Brazil.
A notable highlight for the label was “Show Me Heaven,” which was released three separate times with new mixes and reached number 21 on the UK Charts.
This track was also licensed to Paradox Music in Brazil and featured on a compilation album that sold approximately 300,000 copies.
