Headline: Reverse Bass & Sped-Up Soul: A Beginner’s Guide to Speed Garage

At Neoteric Records, we love a good “Plus-8” vibe. But if you’re new to the site, you might be wondering: What is Speed Garage?
In the mid-90s, DJs in London started taking smooth New York “Garage House” and speeding it up (literally pushing the “pitch” slider on the turntable to +8%). The result was something entirely new. It kept the soulful vocals but added “warped” basslines that sounded like they were moving backward.
Our collection features some of the best examples of this era, like the iconic Lady Marmalade / Funkytown Remix by Taboo. It’s got that signature “swing,” the heavy bass, and the high-speed energy that defined 1998. It wasn’t just music; it was a movement that eventually paved the way for modern Dubstep and Bassline.
